The Emerald and its gardens

The name Emerald comes from the Greek "Smaradgus" which means "green".

Emerald has always been associated with the lushest landscapes and the richest green. Known as the favorite gem of the Pharaohs, especially Cleopatra, it symbolizes hope and eternal life. This is why it is common to speak of the color "emerald green".

The Emerald is the most famous stone of the Beryl family. Also, this rich family contains other colors like the blue sky of the Aquamarine, the golden yellow of the Heliodor, the pink of the Morganite and the red Beryl extremely rare.

The origin of the Emerald can be characterized by the diversity of its greens as well as its inclusions. They are charged with a life in their crystal that gemologists call "gardens".

Many deposits are exploited around the world: Colombia, Zambia, Brazil, Afghanistan…

Today, Colombia and Zambia are the two major producing countries.

The famous Colombian Emerald is known for its vibrant green color and typical three-phase inclusion. These combine a solid state (a crystal), a liquid (water) and a gaseous (a bubble) in the same pocket.

Emeralds from Zambia, on the other hand, are characterized by the finesse of their crystal and almost the absence of "gardens". In terms of color, the green of Zambian Emeralds tends slightly to a bluish green.

Hundreds of millions of years are needed for the Emerald to crystallize and reach the Earth's surface through geological movements. The oldest Emerald was discovered in South Africa dating back to 2.97 billion years. A real treasure of Mother Nature !

The famous "Emerald of Muzo" holds its name from its geographical origin in the Colombian region of Boyacá. This region is located on the mountain range of the Andes, less than one hundred kilometers north of Bogota. The richness of these schist soils allows the creation of the most beautiful Emeralds.

For more than four thousand years, emeralds have been and continue to be one of the most sought after and valuable gemstones on earth. Colombian emeralds have always been hailed as the gold standard to which all other emerald sources are compared to. Colombia dominates the world’s emerald market, and an increase in demand has led Colombian emeralds to be valued at nearly double that of the rest of the world.
A fine emerald can be more valuable than a high quality diamond of the same carat weight.
Since the day they were discovered, emeralds from Colombia are still the world’s finest. Colombian emeralds can be compared to diamonds from Golconda, sapphires from Kashmir, and rubies from Burma. These gemstones are as rare as they are beautiful. Gem experts from all over the world consider Colombian emeralds to be the finest due to their warm and deep color. Unlike diamonds, an emerald that has imperfections but is a rich green is more valuable than a flawless emerald in a paler shade of green. Emeralds that have a deep green color with no imperfections are extremely rare and virtually priceless.
Colombian emeralds can be found in the history books of civilizations across the globe. And to this day, they continue to capture our imagination.
